So Moved

Recently I wrote a piece that talks about how you can narrow down the purpose of your blog by asking yourself some pointed questions.

I did this exercise myself a few months back, so now I’m going through each question one by one because I think there is value in each of these assessments. And while the answers themselves won’t create some magic cloud of genius inspiration to rain down on you every day, the answers definitely give you places to dig deep and offer something of value when you are not sure what to say next.

Today’s focus is on question 2:

When are you moved emotionally?

My answer to this question was: “Almost anything moves me emotionally. I absorb others energy very easily. But specifically I am moved when I see people helping others and themselves.”

This might not seem like a very direct answer, but it is. Almost anything carries an emotional charge for me. Not everything moves me to tears, not everything makes me laugh, but almost anything “feels” like something to me. Which is valuable and also awful.

It’s very hard to go through life being so moved by relatively innocuous things.

It’s incredible to go through life being so moved by relatively innocuous things.

It took me a very long time, I think too long but I try not to dwell on it, to see that I don’t experience life in the same way a lot of people do. I am way more emotionally moved than almost anyone in the room, at any given time.

I can feel if you’re sad and I will go right there with you. That’s a curse. But, I can feel if you’re sad, and I can take you out of it too. For as much as I feel, I can make you feel the same. And that’s a blessing. The wildcard is whether I’m up for the emotional challenge that day.

I’m still learning how to work this thing, it needs an “off” button, but I’m getting there. This 5 Questions exercise served to really uncover this aspect of my personality, which I’d long been aware of. The last few months have shone a spotlight right on it, and I think that’s OK, I think that’s where my attention should be placed actually. It’s valuable information, this emotional responsiveness.

If I’m at my best when I’m helping others, AND I’m emotionally moved by so many things, that’s powerful. Powerful scary, powerful awesome, powerful sweet. It’s all of those. Mostly, where I’m at in my journey right now, it’s valuable information to me and it’s powerful af in terms of where my purpose lies.

I’m here to feel something.

I understand this completely, and mostly live this myself Emily. As a child growing up in NJ we used to be able to skate on the frozen lakes in the winter ~ with 4 other siblings we used to play a game called “whip”. The last person on the whip got whipped around with no ability to control what was happening or where they were going unless they let go of the whip. Living life allowing emotion to control your every day is a real danger if not brought into balance. How do you suggest people bring this into balance?

I think the easiest way to begin is by recognizing that emotions are just energy, and further that they’re run through your own filter as the person experiencing the emotion. Example: love is energy, but an individual might assign a desperation to it and call that love too. If we can gain enough perspective on our emotions to see them for what they are, I think we can work with them and even make them work for us, in time.
