People come and go. A lot of people go. I think that’s life, and that’s sad, and I always have a hard time when they do. Even when I don’t show it.
🙂 They go for lots of reasons, and the thing I’ve learned is that though outwardly perhaps it seems that reason is you, it’s never really about you. So fly, my friends who’ve gone. I send you with all the love I can.
But here I’m talking about the people I’ve now known for 10, 15, 20+ years. Wow, we’re adults now! We are getting older. Our faces are changing. Our bodies are changing. Our perspectives are changing.
I’ve had this Facebook thingy for a while now, since 2008 I think? Maybe a little longer. But I started it as a way to connect with people in a way that I was easily able to connect: on the internet, instantly, quickly, and maybe even superficially.
But sometimes I feel like it’s not a superficial connection at all… it’s very real. Being able to recall memories from many years ago, being able to see your selfie from your hike, the photo of your dog, your mom, whatever… maybe it’s because I’ve been online too much and for too long, but I feel the twang in my heart sometimes. I feel that I am so lucky to still know you, and what a world we live in that I still can.
People use their Facebooks for all kinds of reasons, but for me it’s become the blog I never started. It’s the way I let you see me, and show you I’m OK. It’s the way I see you and reminisce, dream, live vicariously, love, and honor you. It’s become this funny sort of digital time capsule that I’m actually really grateful for.
I’d probably have lost touch long ago with some of the people that in reality I hold very dear. So I appreciate the ridiculous Facebook, because I remember when you were 20 and I see the lines on your face now, like I see the lines on my own, and somehow the lines calm me. You’re still there. I’m still here. We still love each other. We’re still the same, but we’re not at all, and I am proud as hell of my friends and the quality people they still are. The people who stay are your people, and I have some really amazing people. Really.
I love you so hard.
❤
